The Canada Day Committee for MRC Deux-Montagnes is proud to present the 50th edition of Canada Day in Deux-Montagnes on Thursday, July 1st, 2021. Unfortunately, again due to the pandemic, we will be unable to hold our usual, open air celebration with family activities, concerts, and fireworks at Deux-Montagnes’ Central Park. The reopening is progressing well and if Canada Day was September 1st, everything would probably be do-able, but this is not the case. We are, nonetheless, going to do our best to provide an opportunity for all residents of the Deux-Montagnes MRC to celebrate Canada Day, with a combination of actual and virtual events, providing fun for all ages.
Our theme for 2021 is simply “Every Child Matters”. We can no longer celebrate Canada’s birthday without also recognizing our deficiencies in order to become a better nation. Residential schools for First Nations children were abhorrent. The news regarding finding the remains of 215 young children buried at an old residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia was upsetting. We have an obligation as Canadians to do better, not just to acknowledge our past, but to act now and for the future. We seek to bring awareness to this all important issue and as such will use Canada Day as a vehicle for this awareness and as an opportunity for reflection on our Canadian values.
Back for 2021 is our Opening Ceremony and our Community Ride. Residents of the MRC are asked to decorate their vehicles to celebrate Canada Day and our “Every Child Matters” theme. A ceremony at noon will kick off the day at Veterans Hall, including the singing of O Canada, followed by a drive around Deux-Montagnes! We will offer a limited program at Central Park, with the return of our traditional Horseshoes Tournament, along with a Family Zumba class and a Family Bootcamp class. Unfortunately, no food or drinks will be available for sale on site. With our reopening not fully there yet, we will be back online for Virtual Bingo in the afternoon (sign up by June 27th by sending an e-mail to CanadaDayBingo2Mo@gmail.com. The cost is $15.
The evening festivities are also virtual again for 2021. This year, two shows will be presented on our YouTube channel: (1) A condensed version of our Opening Ceremony and Community Ride will be broadcasted at 7:30pm for those who could not be at Veterans Hall at noon. (2) At 8pm, a one-hour show will be presented which will feature requested Canadian songs from you, the residents of the Deux-Montagnes MRC, along with a slideshow of previous Canada Days. The show will also feature two special performances by Skyline Drive.
